Combined vs Workato: self-serve agent data or enterprise orchestration?

Compare Combined with Workato's workflows, enterprise MCP, and context search. Evaluate a revenue exception process from source data to approved action.

Choose Combined when you want managed, synced business data and read-only SQL for an agent without assembling a larger automation stack. Choose Workato when governed enterprise workflows, existing recipes, and application actions are the core requirement. Existing Workato customers should also evaluate its Enterprise Context MCP capabilities and availability.

Compare the scope of the project, not just the MCP endpoint

A revenue-operations agent might need to calculate an exception list, route approval, update a CRM, and notify an owner. Those are several responsibilities. We build Combined to handle the managed data and SQL part. Workato can be a strong choice when your organization is standardizing the broader process and its operational controls.

Account for Workato's data and governance capabilities

Workato can expose project assets or API collections through authenticated MCP servers. Its platform also includes data orchestration and SQL Collection. Evaluate the actual stack you would build using its MCP configuration and platform capabilities.

Enterprise Context MCP exposes connected sources and knowledge bases through search tools, with permissions applied for the caller. Its documentation describes source selection, identity groups, and access controls; availability is limited to selected customers with the relevant entitlement. See Enterprise Context MCP. If your organization already uses Workato, include that route in your evaluation.

Combined is a focused choice for structured business questions. Sync selected data, discover the actual tables and fields, and run SQL under Source grants. Its text search is literal lookup rather than semantic enterprise search. For questions such as “How much paid invoice value belongs to these CRM accounts?”, SQL keeps the calculation explicit. Combined's 1,125 connectors include desktop-generated connections, with the exact supported route established before setup.

Evaluate one revenue exception through the whole process

Pick one process your team will actually run: review accounts with overdue invoices and open renewal opportunities. Define the review window, invoice status, account mapping, and the person responsible for the decision. Keep calculation and execution as separately inspectable steps.

  1. Establish the data answer. In Combined, grant only the required Sources, inspect schemas and freshness, and return a bounded SQL result. Keep unmapped billing customers separate from accounts with no overdue balance.
  2. Define the proposed follow-up: target account ID, renewal owner, summary, and source timestamps. Let a reviewer see the exact record and proposed change.
  3. In an authorized Workato test workspace, map the process to the required assets and connection identity. Workato's verified user access guide describes end-user credentials and configuration limits; inspect nested calls as well.
  4. Record how the design handles an expired connection, a rejected approval, a repeated request, and a changed invoice. Your acceptance criteria should cover both a correct answer and the intended operational outcome.
Prepare a review-only list of accounts with overdue invoices and open
renewal opportunities. Discover the granted schema and actual status
fields. State the date boundary, join keys, currencies, and source
freshness. Aggregate invoice and opportunity facts separately. Return
at most 20 accounts, totals, and SQL. For each account, draft a follow-up
record with its stable ID and owner. Do not update systems or notify anyone.

Measure which assets your team must maintain and whether the reviewer can trace every proposed action back to its data. If your existing Workato stack already produces a verified dataset and governed tools, that is an asset to reuse. If the team is still assembling the data path, Combined provides a direct starting point.

Buy the scope you need and reuse what you already have

Workato's MCP usage rules count successful MCP executions and describe when additional measures apply, including certain document processing, event, and asynchronous workflow activity. Size the complete process against your agreement. For Combined, use monthly active records to estimate the managed data workload.

Choose Workato when the project is an enterprise process platform or an extension of your existing automation investment. Choose Combined when your immediate goal is a useful agent answering questions across business systems, with managed ingestion, storage, and scoped SQL access. They can coexist when the business answer feeds a larger governed process.
